An enthusiast and modder behind the Back 2 Battlefield project has nearly completed a massive reverse-engineering project for the classic tactical shooter Battlefield 2, released in 2005. The author announced the project's imminent transition to open source, publishing a video demonstrating the current build state. The game's official servers were shut down back in 2014 due to the shutdown of GameSpy, but the project remained alive thanks to third-party servers and modifications. Now, the enthusiast plans to release a fully open source codebase, which he has been working on for several years with the goal of accurately recreating the architecture of the original game from 20 years ago.

The project is currently in a fully playable state. The server side is 100% complete and is a native 64-bit build for Windows, and the client-side already provides near-perfect compatibility and runs reliably on most standard game maps. The source code will be made publicly available on GitHub and in the Discord community, completely free of charge for all users and game server administrators. The development is designed as a complete, seamless replacement: the updated client can connect to older servers, and the updated servers will continue to accept players running unmodified versions of the game.

The transition to open source ensures automatic compatibility with all GameSpy backends, including the BF2Hub service, as well as out-of-the-box support for all existing classic modifications, including the Special Forces expansion. The developer is fixing security vulnerabilities, improving the network code, and increasing the shooter's stability on modern hardware. This open platform is expected to free the project from the limitations of legacy executables and serve as a reliable foundation for the creation of next-generation global fan modifications without microtransactions or external restrictions.
